1. Do you guys offer scholarships?
Yes. The Onward and Upwards Scholarship is available to current or former foster-youth attending the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Check the Scholarships page for more details.
2. How can I afford to go to college?
With help! There are a ton of resources out there to help you get through college: from loans, scholarships, grants, tuition-wavers, work-study programs, etc. This site will help you get on the path to finding those resources but you need to put forth the effort to get those resources in your hands! Did you know that Harvard University doesn't even charge tuition to families that make less than $60,000 per year?
3. Why should I go to college?
The U.S. Census Bureau predicts that people who finish a college degree will make over a million dollars more over their lifetime than people who just graduate from high school! That, plus you get to choose whatever you want to study - and if you don't like it, you can change your mind. Think about the lifestyle that you want to have in the future (nice car, house, etc): is your current job going to pay for all of that? If you have a kid, what kind of life do you want them to have in the future?
4. What if I have a kid? Who's going to watch the kid when I go to class?
There are a ton of day-care programs for parents who are attending classes. The key here is to contact the administration at the college you're thinking about going to and speaking with them about your options. Trust me, you can do this.
5. My grades aren't good enough to get into college, what do I do?
You can still do it! A lot of local community colleges have open enrollment - you just sign up for the classes. This could be a great chance for you to work on your Associates Degree and/or think about transfering to a four-year program at a larger school.
6. None of my friends are going to college, why should I?
Check out the answer to question 3 - $1,000,000. This is how much more money you're going to make by going to college. Do you want a better life for yourself than the one you have now? Getting an education is the key to moving your life onward and upwards.
